Keisuke Goda is currently a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Tokyo, an adjunct professor in the Department of Bioengineering at University of California, Los Angeles, and an adjunct professor in the Institute of Technological Sciences at Wuhan University. His research group aims to develop serendipity-enabling technologies based on molecular imaging and spectroscopy together with microfluidics and computational analytics, use them to push the frontiers of human knowledge and understanding, and produce global leaders who will shape the future of biology and medicine. He obtained a B.A. degree summa cum laude from the University of California, Berkeley in 2001 and a Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2007, both in physics. At MIT, he worked on the development of quantum-enhancement techniques in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) group that received the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics for the detection of gravitational waves. He then joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at UCLA as a postdoctoral researcher where he worked on ultrafast optical imaging and spectroscopy and microfluidic biotechnology. In 2012, he joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Tokyo as a professor. From 2014 to 2019, he was a program manager of the ImPACT program in the Cabinet Office, Government of Japan. In 2018, he and his colleagues launched CYBO, Inc., a startup based on intelligent image-activated cell sorting (published in Cell in 2018). In 2019, he joined both the Department of Bioengineering at University of California, Los Angeles and the Institute of Technological Sciences at Wuhan University as an adjunct professor. For his contributions to the development of novel ultrafast imaging and spectroscopy methods and their innovative applications, he has received numerous prizes and awards including Eiichi Takano Award, WIRED Audi Innovation Award, MEXT Young Scientist Award, JSPS Prize, Japan Academy Medal, Yomiuri Gold Medal, and Analytical Chemistry Young Innovator Award. He has published more than 250 papers and holds more than 20 patents. His work has been featured by the media including Nature, Science, Cell, BBC, NHK, Wired Magazine, TIME Magazine, Scientific American, and Discover Magazine. In addition to research and teaching, he also dedicates a significant amount of time and effots to service. He served as Chemistry Department Chair at the University of Tokyo (2016 - 2017), Co-Chair of the IEEE Photonics Society's Los Angeles Chapter (2007 – 2011), Founding Chair of Southern California Japanese Scholars Forum (2007 – 2012), Conference Co-Chair of SPIE Photonics Asia (2014) and Symposium Chair of Optics & Photonics Japan (2014 – 2015) and currently serves as Conference Chair of SPIE Photonics West BIOS (2015 - 2017). He also serves as an Associate Editor of APL Photonics (American Institute of Physics) and an Associate Editor of Cytometry Part A (Wiley). For his global leadership and contribution to the photonics community worldwide, he was selected by World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader in 2014 and by AERA as one of the top 100 leaders in Japan in the same year.
